Alright, about 8 weeks late... A Lot of progress has been made to the tools I use to update the game, so hopefully next year the patch will be completed before week 1 haha. The updated roster was provided by Idabadas (Thanks man!). Uniforms are still being worked on, I'm about halfway done with those. I'll keep updating the patch as new things are completed. You can download the patch in this post (attached).
Done:
- Updated roster for 2017-2018 season.
- New graphics
- Updated Team Uniforms (WIP)
- All Midway Team (similar to the All-Madden team (WIP)
-
I can give you a hand with graphics if you'd like, Jake. :) My IFL rom hack has gone into limbo since doing rosters, graphics and more by myself I felt was biting off more than I could chew after a while. I wouldn't say it's cancelled conpletely, but I may just wait until next season to work on it again. I bet the NFL would be a lot more manageable to do though with all the existing assets there are in the game that I could tweak to match the current NFL rather than doing everything from scratch like the IFL, and I already have the Texans done that I did for blitzmaster a few months ago so we could start with that. What are some goals you had in mind for this seasons rom hack? :)
-
hey TAPFS,
Updated my first post with goals. If you think there is something else cool we could get done in a months span let me know! Also any help is appreciated! We could probably come up with a list of uniforms that need to be updated and we can split those... I know a few people have worked on a 2017-2018 roster, trying to see if I can get a copy of that. Else I might have to start working on that this week.
I have started working on 2018 graphics:

I'll start keeping a running updated graphics list also.

Almost have the ROM hack finished, waiting to hear back from Idabadas to see if he can reupload his most recent roster file. Stay tuned!
-
I randomly searched for a modern hack of NFL Blitz knowing nothing about your website. I came to discover that not only have there been hacks, but one for this year is almost out. This game is perfect for a party I'm planning. I am pumped for this to release.
So basically, I just want to tell you both good luck, we're all counting on you:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmHeP9Sve48 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmHeP9Sve48)

Haha thanks,
Right now pretty much waiting on another forum member to send me his 2017 roster. hopefully I'll get it shortly.
-
Never heard back from Idabadas, I'll try reaching out to him again. If I can't get ahold of him I'll work on updating the roster myself this weekend. Should have the ROM patch out soon!
-
Cool, thanks for the update. If there's anyway a newbie can help, I can contribute.
-
Idabadas got back to be with an updated 2018 week 4 roster! just finishing a few touch ups and testing things out on an everdrive.
-
I hope Doug Martin is the RB for the Buccaneers because that is essential.
-
I'll have a patch out this week. Sorry about the wait, the tool I use to insert graphics had a bug causing the rom hack to not work on real hardware. Got it fixed... The patch won't be 100% complete still working on some minor uniform changes. Yes Doug Martin will be the lead back haha.
-
Will be posting the patch this weekend!
-
I see we have had only 1 download so far. Anyone else looking to try it out? Looking for some feedback.
-
Hey Jake it has been a while! I was looking to download the patch, but didn't see it in your top post. Is it missing?
-
Hey Blitzmaster!
For sure been awhile haha. How have you been? The download should be available... Its listed as a post attachment, should appear at the bottom of my first post. I'll try uploading it to an external host if that isn't working.
-
Been good - very busy, but good! Haven't had any time lately to hack at all unfortunately, but I'm gonna be meeting with some friends and wanted to play some blitz - Figured I would take a look at this version.
I understand now why I couldn't see the link - you have to be logged in to download it. I wasn't logged in originally.
Also, were you able to create a new patch w/ the version that had the extra plays/cheats I sent you a while back? Just curious.
-
good to hear! I have not been able to create a patch with the version with extra plays. They might need to be added one by one. Really focused on making all the hacks compatibility with real hardware. Hope to check into that once all the uniforms are up to date.
-
Hey Jaker,
I just downloaded it and thought it looked really good. I've never played 2000 before (only played the original), so I may not be the best source. However, it was exactly what I was hoping for. I didn't have any problems. The Panthers jerseys didn't look too great, but I assumed that was due to limitations. I also greatly enjoyed how damn big "Big" Ben is, he looks like an O-Lineman. I don't know if you're planning to tweak at all, but I'm definitely pumped to play this with my pals as-is.
-
Hey Blitzed,
Good to hear. I plan on tweaking a good amount still. There is still a handful of team uniforms and logos that need to be updated. If you have any suggestions let me know.

Sounds good. I'm curious if the expanded playbook/extra cheats works on real hardware. Have you tried it?
-
I have not tried it yet, I could give it a shot. I know my graphics tool was causing issues because it would insert sometimes on odd addresses. I fixed it to make sure the address was always even.
Emulators allow reading from unaligned addresses, something that doesn't work on console. To read data from ROM the PI needs to read from even addresses in multiples of 2.

Hey guys long time no see. After last night's playoffs I had the itch to play Blitz again and I was happy to find this site still intact. Thanks for keeping this site going. It's much appreciated.
I downloaded the patch and installed it last night and I just wanted to stay awesome job. It's amazing after all these years this game still keeps me smiling. Is there anyway possible to import this roster into the Dreamcast version of NFL Blitz 2000?
-
Thanks! Updating a Dreamcast game shouldn't be that hard. I looked a little bit into it a few years back before I started dedicated the majority of my development towards the N64 version. I'll see if I can find some time in the next few weeks to add dreamcast support real quick. Nice thing about the dreamcast is its easy to play burned games :)

Hey Jaker how's it going? Is there a tutorial on using the roster updater? I'm trying to import the 2018 roster into the original nflblitz pc game and I'm a bit confused on the steps of using it. And I definitely agree with you on the Dreamcast version of Blitz 2000. I really like playing blitz in 60fps and only the Dreamcast, Mame and PC versions do 60fps.
-
I can write an updated guide this week. I never fully got the PC version to work correctly. It updates the roster, but seems to cause an issue where the game won't run. I've been trying to work out a fix. On the dreamcast side, I've reached out on another forum for a little help.

Thanks Jaker I appreciate it. Can the roster update work with the MAME version of blitz. I finally got some time off this weekend and I'm planning on trying to see if I can get this up and running. Once again, thanks for all your hard work.

Alright... Some bad news and some good news. So when I originally "added" PC support to the blitz roster manager I never tested it.... I just looked at the executable file, found that it contained player and team names, added those locations into a "template" for my editor to change. Well here is the thing... I have no idea where those team and player names are used. I successfully edited the 2000 PC version and noticed that numbers change, but the names do not....
So I started writing a generic "texture view/editor" as side project for learning experience. I looked at both 99 and 2000 PC graphics files and saw that it uses sprite sheets for names :-\
(https://image.ibb.co/d3bB9G/Blitz_Files.png)
As you can see here all the player names sprites are stored in TMSEL00-TMSEL10.WMS
Good news is I hope to support editing the sprite sheets so the names can be changed still. Only downside is it''l probably be a decent amount of manual work until I find a way to have it automatically get it done.
Until then at least we have the N64 version, and I'll still look into the dreamcast version.
-
Hey thanks for looking into it man. I love the N64 version as much as the other ones. Thanks for your hard work again man.

Wondering if anyone can help me out here..
I want to be able to play as Houston with Watson,Hopkins,Fuller ect so I have created a roster file for 2k using the Roster Editor supplied on this forum (thanks jaker3!)
I have tried to apply the roster to a zoinkity patched rom (being sure to use the rom that had been x-delta patched, and setting System=N64 and Game=2000-Zoinkity in the roster manager) however the roster manager crashes when I click Save Roster to Rom.
I'm not sure how active this board is anymore but if anyone out there could help me figure this (or take my updated roster and turn it into an xdelta patch) I would be ultra grateful.
My friends and I love having the ability to play blitz with current rosters but having Houston missing is like having an itch that I cannot scratch.
For all those interested, the attached roster file is fairly up to date with all the recent offseason moves (all qb changes, jordy to raiders, graham to packers, etc) If I am able to get a working version with houstons updated roster, I will gladly continue to supply updated roster files as well as an All-Time Greats roster file I have worked on over the last few months
-
Hey lukeman,
Yeah the forums are still active, I'll take a look your roster file tonight. If its an easy fix I generally can get the fix put up the next day if not the same night.
-
Luke: Here's another thing you may want to think about. The Texans in Zoinkity's patch only have the home (dark blue) jerseys, which can be annoying because they will sometimes have almost the same color jersey as the opposing team and make it hard to discern. TAPFS had made some alternate jerseys that you can import using the graphical editor tool (see the graphic editor tool thread). Here are the jersey files:
https://puu.sh/w2gao/ed3e75352d.zip
I seem to remember that I had to fiddle w/ the files that were imported to make it look correct, but can't remember it was so long ago. Here's a pic of them that TAPFS showed:

@lukeman,
Looks like there might be something wrong with the roster file, wasn't able to get it to save to the ROM. The issue might be because some last names are over the 16 character limit (i'm adding some restrictions to prevent names longer than 16 characters to prevent this). Is the application actually crashing? Or is it just "Not Responding" The ROM is not open in any other program is it? I'll try and add some checks this week to prevent a few possible issues that could be giving you issues.
@Blitzmaster,
Thanks for the reminder haha, I'll get those uniforms added.
-
Thanks for all the info! I didn't realize there was a 16 char limit on the names. I updated my roster file and think I took care of all of those issues. Also went through each team and fully updated the rosters based off the depth charts here: http://www.ourlads.com/nfldepthcharts/depthcharts.aspx
Question - Is the ' ' that would occur between first and last name count towards the 16 char limit?
-
Awesome, got it working... I had a bad check which was causing some issues. If you redownload the roster editor it should work now. Let me know!
-
u da man jaker3! I am finally am able to update the rosters and play as Houston. I've uploaded an AllTime roster which contains the best players from each franchises' history if anyone is interested. Thank you so much for sharing the tools to make this possible.

Anyone want to help out making an NFL Blitz 2019 roster for the upcoming season? Looking to put another room hack out for this season.
-
Here is an updated roster for this year. Thanks for all your work!

Thanks lukeman! I'll start working on the patch with 2019 graphics this week.
-
Is there any work still being done on this?
-
I still actively develop the tooling. I just actually published the source for the roster editor to git a few weeks ago. Currently I'm working on rewrites of the existing tooling as well as roster editing that should work with the PC and arcade version.
-
Would it be possible to do roster editing for the PS1 versions of Blitz? I'd love to have custom rosters for Kurt Warner's Arena Football Unleashed which used the same engine as the other Blitz games on PS1 if that's ever possible to make an editor for. There's very few arena football video games out there which is why I'd love to be able to edit the rosters and update that one with modern teams.
Also, did you guys have plans to do an updated rom for this year/next year? If so I could help out with textures. I'll have to take some time to refresh myself on things but I don't think it'll be too hard to relearn what I did before. I was here a few years ago under my old account TAPFS, but I'm back for good now. I'm sorry for ghosting you guys, it definitely won't happen again. The main reason I left was because I lost interest in football, but ever since the Super Bowl this year I've quickly gotten back into it.
-
Hey Lugia,
This is the first time I've ever heard of Kurt Warner's Arena Football Unleashed to be honest haha. I'm a huge blitz fan obviously so I'm surprised . I can take a look at it and see what I can come up with. Kind of interested to poke around with it anyways now. Yeah I plan to have something for the upcoming 2020-2021 season. I'm looking into a why to partially automated it ATM. But yeah helping with updated textures would be awesome.
Also, NP at all haha, peoples interest change and people get busy; its all good haha.
-
Hey jaker,
Good to see you again. :) Thanks for responding. The forum seems kinda dead these days but maybe we can change that. I don't blame you for not knowing about Arena Football Unleashed either, it's a pretty obscure Midway game. I actually found it by accident a few years ago while watching Blitz videos on YouTube.
As far as I can tell its built off of Blitz 2000 for PS1. It doesn't have the mini games 2001 had but it does have the features 2000 added like the play editor, electricity mode in place of on-fire mode and 4 player multiplayer. Not sure if you're familiar with modifying data for the PS1 versions of Blitz or not but I bet that would be a good place to start since the data is probably laid out the same way in those games as it is in AFU.
Also, for automating rosters one thing you could try is to pull data from a website and import it into the roster editor you made. Maybe you could have an extra button in the GUI for that in a later update. I figure the NFL's got a website for player stats and info somewhere but I haven't seen it myself. You could have the editor search in a website like that for player data and convert it to values to insert into the roster of the rom that's loaded in the editor. Not sure how much work that would be to do or how feasible it is but it might be one way to go about automating the process.
-
Hey Lugia,
Yeah Thats what I pretty much planned to do. Scrape the depth charts off the an internet and auto fill everything from it. The only thing I don't think I'll be able to automate is player skin color. I haven't looked much into hacking the PS1 version, but I'll take a look. Most of the work I'm completing for the PC version right now should be partially reusable for the other systems.
-
Hey jaker,
It's me, Lugia. I wanted to change my username but found out I couldn't so I decided to create a new account. Apologies for any confusion. If you need someone to test stuff you're developing for PC Blitz I can do that. I bought a copy of it off eBay today and it should be here by late next week. If you make any breakthroughs on hacking PS1 Blitz I can help with testing that too.
I have an ISO backup of PC Blitz as well that I downloaded from ISOZone a few years ago before that got shut down so if you want anything tested before my physical copy arrives I can test stuff with that. Are you working on PC Blitz or 2000? I think some cracked versions of 2000 are floating around online but I haven't tried those. PC Blitz works fine on my laptop but I remember having trouble getting 2000 to run on Windows 10 in the past.
-
Hey Sharpedo,
Not a problem hahaha. The work I'm doing applies to both NFL Blitz and NFL Blitz 200 for the PC. Sounds good! I'll keep you in the loop on progress.
-
Hey jaker,
My physical copy of NFL Blitz PC came today so I'm all set. I'll try to get a copy of NFL Blitz 2000 for PC someday too. Good luck with your work, I can't wait to give the PC version some roster updates like we've given the N64 version :) Have you thought about expanding the file editor to work with PC files? Custom textures on PC would be a cool next step to look into for PC Blitz hacking.
-
Hey Sharpedo,
That actually will be possible once the roster editor for the PC version is complete. The two go hand in hand, player names are stored as image/sprite sheets.
