Title: NFL Blitz 2015 N64 Demo ROM
Post by: jaker3 on April 05, 2014, 08:34:41 AM
I've uploaded a demo ROM for the NFL Blitz 2000 N64 2015 roster update. It includes a roster put together by Idabadas with some WIP team stats. This is not a final project and you can expect a lot more changes to come (hopefully some new graphics also!)

Awsome! what emulator are you using? PJ64 2.1/2.0? I'm able to edit the graphics on the dreamcast but the N64 is proving to be a bit harder so I was thinking about just using the HD high resolution texture plugins with the 64 emulators. Also you notice any lag while playing?

I was using PJ64 1.7 to get the field lines with the emulation. The plugin can be used to have HD type graphics. The only lag I experienced was when I was recording it.

Alright, sweet. For the past few days I've been trying to get HD textures to work with the rice video plugin. Ended up being to slow and like you said PJ64 1.7 is the only one I found to draw the yard lines... On that note the textures for that video plugin run smooth! Here is a glitchy example of some textures I've been playing with:

One thing I'd like to have is being able to choose which computer team I face, like in the Blitz games after 2001. Just a suggestion, nothing you should lose sleep over.

I still have no idea on what to even look at to get expansion teams added. I wish I knew how they expanded the NES Tecmo Bowl, RBI, and NHL Roms. That would probably give me a clue on how to go about it… As for picking the computer’s team that seems a little more practical as something I could do… Hopefully we get some more people on board soon to help speed up the progress lol.

Not yet, there are a few people I plan on contacting in the N64 hacking community though...

BTW, figured out another hack, now I'm able to set player size (normal or fat)

It works good, the only thing is that you can only save the rosters on the ROM you uploaded. IDK if you can fix that or not.

Yeah, it was an interesting draft... Just an update. Ive got a few emails from a very smart person in the N64 hacking community. He’s currently helping me understand the graphics used in the game... Hopefully which will allow us to insert graphics for the expansion team (Texans). I'm hopeful that we can get it done prior to season kickoff.

Title: Re: NFL Blitz 2015 N64 Demo ROM
Post by: jaker3 on May 15, 2014, 09:40:05 AM
From the sounds of it its possible. One other thing he pointed out is that each player has a "luck" value that is used to calculate fumbles, interceptions, pass completions, ect...

I'll try and add the luck value to the roster editor this weekend.

Title: Re: NFL Blitz 2015 N64 Demo ROM
Post by: zoinkity on May 25, 2014, 10:10:25 AM
I should probably explain the "luck" value.

The game uses a lot of "die rolling" to determine pass completion, interference, tackling, etc.  The luck value only applies to receivers, and it's a modifier for the success of these rolls.  If you try to tackle a receiver this value is read, if they shoulder a guy this value is read, etc.  Oddly, it's the receiver's luck that's checked when the ball is passed to them, not the guy who threw it.  So, as strange as it may seem, somebody trying to intercept the ball during a pass will be less successful if the guy you're passing it to is "lucky", despite how crummy the passer was.

I did have one question: is a player's first name ever used in-game?  I haven't found a reference to it yet, and if it isn't used clearing those names out would double the number of possible additional teams from 15 to 32--almost doubling the number of teams.  Granted it could be increased more with effort, but it's sort of a ludicris number to begin with.

The amount of data stored that isn't used is rather amusing really.  Position numbers aren't used, there's a placeholder for a filelist ID for a face that hasn't been used since the original, one of the 3-letter names isn't used, as are the values for the linemen or defense outside of displaying them.  Except for the special team value and difficulty factor, no team stats are used during gameplay; they're exclusively for generating simulate data.

In that regard, it turns out the game is remarkably fair despite the wildly different team values.

@Zoinkity,

I looked around... I flipped through the loading screens and couldn't find anything. I know they used them in other versions (Arcade, PC, ect...):
example:(http://s21.postimg.org/liz7xl613/Screen5.jpg)
But do not see them in the N64 version.
Title: Re: NFL Blitz 2015 N64 Demo ROM
Post by: Idabadas on May 27, 2014, 09:35:34 PM
Yeah, the N64 version is a lot simpler with less loading screens and duller graphics. That's why it may be important to get to the multiple systems the game was released on.

Hey, just an update.

Zoinkity, has made a lot of progress. Currently I'm working on trying to manually update graphics, once I get the process down I think I'm going to try and make a tool to automate it.

When I say automatic I mean the user would supply the image and location to store it in the ROM.

Quick update,
Sorry about not posting in awhile I've been a little busy with some vacation. I've added support to edit Zoinkity's patch to the roster editor, I have to work out a few bugs and I should have it posted soon. I'm taking a PTO Friday and should find some time to work on completing it... Expect to see it soon.

I have it working with both the un-hacked and hacked version of blitz 2000! It will also be able to support blitz and blitz 2001 with little work in the future (Just a custom xml file) The Old save file will not work with the new editor, but if you re-upload the newest version you have I can convert it. I should have the updated editor uploaded sometime this week along with a rom with menu screens replaced with new 2015 graphics.

Sorry about the lack of updates. My wedding is next Saturday and I've been doing a lot of last minute things for it. Just wanted to give an update that Zoinkity has been working on the ROM hack and said he may be done in a week or so! How awesome is that! At that time we'd be able to freely distribute the patch without any kind of legal issues with giving out the full ROM.

Is this project still alive? I have been trying to play this, but I can't seem to find a download that works. I also have a few questions:

1. What version of project 64 do I use? I have 2.1 right now.
2. Do I need to download a normal blitz 2000 ROM? How exactly do I install this mod/hack?
3. Can I use a wired Xbox controller to play?
4. Does co-op work? My cousin and I have been looking to face each other.

Hey Bacon,

Yes this project is still alive. You need to obtain an NFL Blitz 2000 ROM then you install this path here:
http://nflblitzfans.com/nfl-blitz-hacking/nfl-blitz-2000-team-extension-patch/

There is instructions in the readme. It works with all emulators and even on real hardware if you have a flash cart.

Alright, I downloaded the Blitz 2000 ROM and created a new patched ROM. I still have a few questions:

1. How do I get the actual rosters + loadscreens? I have the Texans but not the correct players. I also downloaded the most recent roster-update xml file. Where do I put it?

2.Should the new patched rom be a z.64 file?

Hey Bacon,

Awesome you got the patch working. The creator of the patch just released  it at the beginning of the month. I've been working hard on trying to get a tool to insert the load screens semi-automatically.... That part is currently not done. We created a tool to actually update the roster (separate from the patch). The current version we have on the site doesn't support the new patch yet. I'll try to get it posted on Sunday if you want to check back then for it.

So here's what I did:

1. I downloaded a fresh copy of NFL Blitz 2000 Rom
2. Patched Fresh Rom with XdeltaUI version of blitz 10 team xdelta file (the 11 team xdelta file gives error when trying to patch)
3. Selected Roster Importer to N64/Zoinkitty Blitz 10 Hack
4. Selected Load Roster File to Idabadas's updated roster
5. Patched Rom
6. Rosters are up to date but all players are beefed up and skin colors are different

You might be able to. I'd imagine the loop is pretty small so I'm not sure if a super long song could be inserted. There is an existing tool you could play around with and try out.

Link to the took: http://www.goldeneyevault.com/viewfile.php?id=212

If you figure anything out let me know, would be interesting to see different songs/sounds.

Just another update, Zoinkity gave me a pretty in depth overview on the image files in the N64 blitz game.  I was able  to create a program to convert images both ways. I will probably try and release it the next few weeks.

Yes, you can change the music, and you can use SubDrag's N64SoundTools to do it.  The format is N64PtrTablesV2.

Although his tool can alter sound in-place, it has the limitation of not being able to exceed the original bank's sound.  You can use a dummy file though (basically a blank file of absurd size with the right header, or an extracted one), edit that, then insert it into the filetable like any other data (teams, images, etc.).  Filename has to be the same for the stuff to be found.

Actually, you can also insert the announcer callouts for teams the same way.  Filename should be the team's name.  Look at existing ones for a reference.  It doesn't use hard IDs to them, only filename lookup.  Only trouble is getting some nice, clean source to work from, otherwise I would have done it for the Texans.

First off Awesome job on the mod! , NFL Blitz was always one of my favorite games and I was hoping eventually someone would update the rosters  ;D... I was wondering is there anyway to edit the colors of the jerseys? for example The Pats have there old Royal Blue jerseys it would be amazing to change them to navy , too bad the mod wasn't for Blitz 2001 they had their Navy jerseys in that game... also im not sure if its just me or what but I played like 6 games and I always have on my white/away jerseys  ???

Hey Patriots521,

Yes that should be possible. I'd imagine they use the same format for images in 2001 as they did in 2000 so I think I could just swap them in. Otherwise I'm also working on an image editor that should be done sooner then later.

God, I feel horrible lol. I know you asked for this months ago.... How does something like this look:
I took a look at the 2001 game and the colors didn't seem to match their new uniform. I also found out that Jersey colors are shared between teams. So there was originally 31 teams with about 22 jersey colors. The good news is since Zoinkity added the Texans I can just reuse their dark navy blue jersey and socks. The only thing I will need to change is the shoulder pads and pants strips. I think I could have this done pretty quick... My old college buddy will be stopping over on Saturday so I'm trying my hardest to get as much done as possible so we can play it haha.

EDIT: Ignore tom brady's size and color lol.... this was a test rom I used.

Hey guys sorry for taking so long. I was focusing on making the file editor work correctly... I spent the past week trying to figure out why replacing files uniforms in the file table causes issues with some teams. I am how ever able to insert the files at the end of the file table and they seem to work. So I will release a patch later today with the roster updates long with the patriots home uniform and new cheerleader pics.

@Idabadas, is there a reason you use the old editor versus the new one? Are you still having issues with the new editor?

I used the roster file that wasn't for the patch, and figured I would just finish that one and do the patched file later. Since I would have to start from scratch.

Hey fallinouttadabox,
Currently there is only an expansion team hack for the N64, it was written by Zoinkity.
However, the NFL Blitz Roster Editor is currently capable of handling multiple systems. Arcade is actually the next I'm  going to be adding to the roster editor. Check back in a week or two as it would be cool to see if someone could run it on real arcade hardware.

Just wanted to let you know I'm still actively working on this project. With it being spring an all I've just been busy the past month cleaning up outside, staining my deck, and your typical yard work... I should be posting the graphic editor in the next few weeks which will hopefully allow more people contribute to updating the graphics!

Hey fallinouttadabox,

I have the arcade editor files done I just haven’t uploaded them... I currently don’t have access to my PC at home (renovating office, it’s in a box). I can make a patch possibly and send you it.

@Everyone else, I'm still working on this game hack, I do want to apologize thought that i have not made much ground in the past few months. My brother in law is currently living with us and I'm renovating my home office so I'm pretty stretched for time. I hope to release the graphic editor soon so I can have others help contribute. There is just one last bug I'm trying to figure out.

Just an update,

Like I said before I've been allowing my brother in law and his family to live with me (going on 2 months now) while he waits to close on a new house in the area.... Because of this I've been strapped for time to do any type of fun work... Today I've managed to find some time to work on the file editor again. I'm still stuck on an issue with inserting new uniforms and getting it to work on the real N64 hardware. I've sent a message to zoinkity to see if he can figure out what I'm doing wrong. Hopefully I'll have some better news in the next few weeks.

For those who still browse the forums, thanks for your support!

Awesome! Zoinkity got back to me real quick! my editor wasn't padding odd size files. To sum up the issue real N64 hardware inst able to read odd addresses. So you need to pad files to be even. I should have a patch up sometime next week (have to go out of town this weekend) that works with real hardware!

I hate to be "That guy" ... But being new to this how do you apply the downloaded mod you provided to the n64k emulator game file. I just can't find any source code for the emulated ROM to just replace like I have for other mods I have done. Any tips that could be provided would be great. Also thanks for doing this work!
